Medicus Insurance Company, one of America’s fastest growing medical professional liability insurance carriers, has an immediate opportunity in its organization for an experienced Underwriter

.

Analyzes new applications and re-evaluates existing policies of medical professional liability insurance; maintains underwriting integrity and adequate pricing of risks; provides technical expertise to Company employees and agents, along with excellent client service. Assists in the training and development of Assistant Underwriters and performs special projects as assigned by the Underwriting Manager.

Responsibilities
Compiles and analyzes new and existing liability exposures and loss data to determine quality of risk and their acceptability with respect to underwriting guidelines and proper rating categories. Effectively documents underwriting recommendations and decisions.

Accepts or binds risks, via written quotes, indications and binders, in accordance with Medicus rate and rule filings and within designated underwriting authority. Declines or modifies policy coverage. Re-evaluates existing business to determine continued acceptability, adjustments to premium, modification of coverage, cancellation or non-renewal.

Determines and clearly communicates Medicus coverages to be offered via policy forms, state-specific mandatory endorsements, and standard endorsements. Provides coverage expertise to Company employees and agents.

Performs oversight of Client Service Representative’s issuance of policies, endorsements, binders and certificates of insurance. Performs actual issuance of policies, endorsements, binders and certificates of insurance as needed.

Assists in the training and development of Client Service Representatives and Associate Underwriters.

Performs regular external communications with agents and insureds, effectively explaining underwriting decisions and viewpoints, and the philosophy of Medicus, while building good and lasting relationships. Consistently demonstrates excellent customer service skills.

Travels to agents’ offices and customer facilities, as necessary, on production calls or account renewal visits, or to resolve complex underwriting issues, or attends educational conferences.

Maintains an effective diary system to properly update and document underwriting files.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements
Four year college degree. IIA series and RPLU IV preferred, or education or experience equivalent. State P&C license desirable.

Two years of experience in physician or hospital medical professional liability insurance underwriting industry or three years in a related healthcare or insurance field.
